Leading Italian ice cream producer, Sammontana, began life in a small artisanal milk shop owned by the Bagnoli family in Empoli near the historic city of Florence in Tuscany. It was Bagnoli’s forward-thinking son, Renzo, who convinced his father to turn his modest milk shop into a contemporary gelato parlour. Since that day in 1948, Renzo and his brothers, Sergio and Loriano, have built a gelato empire that focuses on delicious Italian ice cream. Today, the family business continues in Empoli and is run by Loriano, his son Leonardo and Renzo’s son, Marco. 

Sammontana produces varied and flavoursome lines of gelato including its classic product, the Barattolino. 

Launched in 1955, when freezers started to become commonplace in Italian homes, the Barattolino was the first gelato that could be enjoyed in the comfort of one’s home and shared with friends and family. The Barattolino, now available in an array of traditional flavours including hazelnut, sour cherry, pistachio, cappuccino and chocolate, remains a top seller and household favourite across Italy. 

Through years of innovation and creativity, more tasty lines have been added to satisfy every customer’s gelato desires. For example, the Gruvi is a gelato on a stick available in a variety of flavours. It features a creamy, smooth gelato centre dipped in a pistachio, salted caramel, chocolate or a yoghurt coating, and comes with sprinkles of coconut, nuts, crumbled cookie or fruit, for added texture.

There’s also the new and unique Coppa D’oro, which is made with soft gelato and light fluffy meringue and served in a small tub - perfect for serving in a restaurant, or selling individually. 

For those with specific dietary requirements, Sammontana has also created its first gluten and dairy free gelato, the Amando, which is made with creamy almond milk ice cream and crunchy gluten-free cones.
