1968 - 2011

  • Salvatore (Salvo) Cumbo first established Salvo in a small North London delicatessen
  • After initial success, the business continued to expand. Larger premises were acquired in Caledonian Road, and further family members joined the company
  • Salvo were the first sole importer of San Giorgio beer into the UK
  • Salvo became the first Italian importer in the UK to supply Italian flours exclusively for pizza
  • Fior di Latte, as it is known as today, was added to Salvo’s portfolio of exclusive products supplied in the UK. To this day, the company still work closely with Latteria Sorrentina to supply Fior di Latte to UK food establishments
  • The first generation of the Salvo family endured extraordinary economic events, including the Manufacturing meltdown of 1980, and the banking bust of 2008, yet still remained a solid company in the food import and distribution industry
  • Salvo and Rondanini, a leading Italian food importer of chilled and ambient products, joined forces to establish Salvo 1968 Ltd
  • The new association would supply foodservice organisations from their advanced distribution facility in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire
  • Giuseppe Motisi was appointed as Managing Director, and Rosa Giambrone Gibson; granddaughter of Salvatore, appointed as Purchasing Director

2012 - to date

  • Salvo 1968 strengthened the chilled and ambient side of the business through the acquisition of Fine Italian Foods. This allowed Salvo to add to their portfolio of products tailored for the delicatessen and retail sector
  • Claudia Giambrone; another of Salvatore's granddaughters, together with senior management initiated Salvo's online sales platform
  • Salvo 1968 became one of the first Italian wholesalers to launch an online B2B shopping platform, showcasing over 1,200 products
  • Salvo 1968 sponsored Australian Italian comedian Joe Avati during his UK tour
  • Salvo 1968 gained the achievement of EFSIS accreditation; a widely recognised standard for storage and distribution of chilled and ambient foods
  • Salvo 1968 achieved a grade A BRC accreditation in storage and distribution
  • Salvo 1968 relaunched the online shopping platform to make it more accessible on mobile and tablets, meeting the growing demand of on-the-go purchasing
  • Voltan; one of Italy's largest manufacturers of fresh and filled Pasta, Rondanini UK Ltd and Salvo 1968 Ltd form the Vita Food Group bringing the finest and most authentic Italian flavours to the table through manufacturing, importing and distribution
  • Salvo 1968 acquired the luxury portfolio of products and customers of Guidetti Fine Foods

The future …

  • Salvo 1968 are launching a brand new website, with real time stock availability, updated product photographs and detailed product descriptions
  • Salvo 1968 will operate from a new, second depot in Manchester, to improve their distribution network across the country
  • Salvo 1968 are introducing a portfolio of frozen products under the sub-brand Salvo-18
